What's the difference between porcelain tiles or ceramic tiles?
Porcelain tiles are actually made from ceramic and there are 2 types of porcelain tiles as well as
non-porcelain tiles.
- Unglazed porcelain tiles (often referred to as homogenous) where the surface effect is produced within
and is part of the body of the tile
- Glazed porcelain tiles where the surface effect is printed onto the body of the tile in the normal way

Most of tiles produced in the world are non porcelain and these tiles have a red or white clay body
onto which a glaze effect is printed. This type is use specific. Non porcelain wall tiles can only be used on the
walls as they are not designed to be strong enough for floor use.
Porcelain tiles, particularly the homogenous type are often used in commercial applications where
durability is more important. They can also be polished to produce a glass-like surface for stunning visual impact.
Porcelain tiles are very hard so you can use exactly the same product on your walls and on your
floors.
Porcelain tiles often have rectified edges. This process grinds off the natural curvature at the
very edges and give you a more precise modern style that allows fixing with very narrow grout joints
So are porcelain tiles better?
Yes they are, but like any decorative product they are better mostly because beauty is in the eye
of the beholder!
